I actually use this on a 10 gallon aquarium. Overkill? Maybe, but all the filters that were for a 10 gallon aquarium left me with murky water and algae. This filter keeps the water very clean. I love it so much, I bought two extras and keep them as back up (I live in the middle of nowhere which is why I buy so much stuff online. We don’t even have a grocery store in my town, I have to go to the next town over and THEY almost threw a parade when they got a Wal-Mart several years back). So, I like to have backups for things like this- just in case.

I clean out this filter about once every two to three months. I use well-water for the fish (we live in the country and have a well).Great for the fish, bad for the filter. The filter actually gets caked with the mineral deposits from the water. I disasemble it, scrub it down with a toothbrush, rinse out the filter mediums and volia- it’s like a brand new filter. The little spinner that runs the filter has actually stopped on me from having so much gunk in it from the hard water, but I clean it, thinking for sure this is it, no more filter, but as soon as the gunk is out, it works like a charm. We’ve had this product for over a year now and my two backups are still in storage. No algae build up, no murkey water and I’ve only replaced the sponge filter once (I wash it and reuse it all the rest of the times I clean it). I even wash and resuse the carbon and rock filters. So far so good. I don’t know much about maintaining fish except feeding them and letting live in water (and vacumming their gravel) which is all we do and our tanks doing great. I think it’s this filter that made all the difference.
