I'm not sure how that affects the fish and their natural sleep cycle but I know that if you leave the tank light on too much it increases the algae growth in the tank, which affects water quality which could harm the fish.

hey...it does t really affect the fish if it has enough plants and rocks to hide...if possible try to avoid couple of hours of direct light which usually suspends above the tank as tubes or bulbs...it wld really help de-stressin the fish....the fishes wld definitly require 6-7 hrs of calm lighting...this wld help the fish relax...but if u have adequate plants and rocks then u dont need to worry much

You'll find that in a tank properly setup to be fully stress free, the fish will do fine - they don't need to sleep the way we do, though I'm sure I'm the only one who will post this opinion - it's easier to anthropomorphize the fish then to learn about their biology. Problems may arise if the fish have stresses in their environment like unsuitable tankmates or decoration, which they will then be exposed to 24 hours per day without reprieve. Actuall aquarium lights being on all the time will create massive algae growth, but that's not really a concern if most of the lighting will be indirect room lighting.
